Berkshire
Choral Festival E-Newsletter November 2006
Happy November from BCF!
The trees are bare and there is an unmistakable
chill in the air, but there are many things to be thankful for
here at BCF. With twenty-five successful seasons behind us, we
are already looking forward to 2007 – the new brochure
is at the printer, the website is being updated and the entire
office is gearing up to start the registration process all over
again!
Recognize
this hockey rink? Believe it or not, this is what the BCF concert
shed looks like in the winter…but not for
long! Berkshire School has recently announced an extensive plan
to expand and update the campus, including the construction of
an 112,000-square-foot athletic facility, which will house two
hockey rinks. One of the rinks will be the new BCF concert shed
in a few years.
Annual Fund Update
Thanks to those of you who have contributed
to the 2006 Annual Fund, we are getting very close to the goal
of $209,000. With the fiscal year ending November 30,
the Annual Fund currently stands at $202,326, or 96.8% to goal.
If you have not yet given to BCF this year, there’s still
time…donate today!
David Hill,
with whom many of you have sung in Sheffield and Canterbury,
has been named BBC Singers chief conductor…
David Hill has been appointed chief conductor of the BBC Singers.
He will take up the post next summer, succeeding Stephen Cleobury,
who becomes conductor laureate.
“I am delighted and honoured,” said Hill, whose previous
roles have included head of music at Winchester and Westminster
Cathedrals. “[The BBC singers] is a group of exceptionally
gifted musicians respected the world over and I am looking forward
to working more closely with them over the coming months and years.”
Hill will step down from his current position
as director of the choir of St John’s College, Cambridge at the end of this
academic year. He told Gramophone that it was a “difficult
decision” to leave after what has been a relatively short
tenure (he took up the post in 2003) but that he felt it was the
correct decision to make in the light of his new job and other
existing commitments, including musical director of The Bach Choir. Martin Cullingford, The Gramophone

Carl Johengen, BCF faculty member and
award-winning composer of choral and vocal music, had a new choral
composition featured in “New
York Sings! A Composers’ Symposium,” a daylong event
held on November 4 at Corning Community College. Dominic DiOrio,
a 2006 Berkshire Scholar, was among the other composers whose works
were featured at this event. Johengen serves as Co-Minister of
Music at St. Thomas’ Church in Bath, NY and is a member of
the music faculty at Nazareth College in Rochester. His compositions
are performed around the country by church and community choruses,
and have been featured in radio broadcasts as well. His work is
featured in the catalogs of four prominent sacred choral music
publishers and has been included in several hymnals.
Happy Thanksgiving to You and Yours!
